Mexico may not be the first country you think of when you think about cigars, but increasingly there are great smoke coming out of the country. Indeed Tobacco culture in Mexico goes right back to the Mayans who certainly smoked tobacco in pipes and even in crude rolls that would be not a million miles away from what we know as cigars. Mexico also has one of the best tobacco growing regions in the world in the San Andreas area. However Mexico struggled for many years under with trade restrictions and tariffs which made in extremely difficult an uneconomic to import tobacco. Since the 1990's things have gotten a little easier and tobacco from other nations is increasingly available. Mexican tobacco is also increasingly being used by blenders in other countries and binder from Mexico is increasingly common in Maduro cigars. Despite struggling for many years, what Mexico has always had is skilful cigar rollers. So one of the best tobacco growing areas in the world, access to tobacco from other great tobacco producing nations and highly skilled rollers. Might be time to see what Mexico has to offer eh! .... oh and did we mention value, Mexican cigars still don't command the same prices as others from Nicaragua, Dominican Republic and Honduras! Time to fill the shopping cart then...
