Cigar of the week. Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Petit Corona

This months new world cigar brand of the month is Rocky Patel Cigars, if you haven't read our post about the brand and it's history you can check it out HERE. Each week we focus on one of the cigars from the brand that we think is an exceptional example.

This week our cigar of the week is the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Petit Corona . The Vintage 1990 blend has become nothing short of legendary since it's release in 2003. The wrapper is a 12 year aged Honduran broadleaf, whilst the filler and binder comprise tobaccos from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua aged for 7 years! It also comes in a large range of vitolas which make it a great choice whether you like em fat or thin, long or short!

So why have we chosen the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Petit Corona as this week's cigar of the week?

Firstly, many of my life's memories are punctuated by cigars and food, I have a funny way of remembering life's events in parallel with either of them! I remember clear as day the first Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 I smoked. I know where I bought it (and how many), exactly where I smoked it and exactly how I felt when I smoked it (hungover!). That was the impression the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 made on me. I won't bore you with the entire story, but it was on a balcony of a hotel in Romania overlooking my better half's home town. I'd bought it from El Unico (FYI the best chain of cigar shops in Romania). I had one, from a full box out of the back of their humidor. The cello beautifully discoloured. Even with my hangover, it blew my mind... the next day I was back at El Unico and the remainder of the box is in the humidor next to me as I type!

Secondly, the vitola and flavour profile. It's getting nippy outside, the leaves are starting to turn their beautiful autumn colours and the never ending UK rain is back for a few months! Petit Coronas offer a beautiful length smoke for the British winter. At 4.5 inches long by 44 ring gauge it's big enough to know you've had a 'proper' cigar, but with a smoke time of around 30 minutes quick enough to still enjoy outside at this time of year. Personally I love the Vintage 1990 blend in the cooler months, it has a spicy, nutty edge to it which goes perfectly with a coffee and a sip of rum or whisky when there is a nip in the air!

Finally, the Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 is a new world cigar that has been on many cigar smokers journey as they graduate from mild cigars and start to explore slightly stronger cigars. It is also one of the first new world cigars many people smoke made with seriously aged leaves. Once you've smoked it once, like me, you will be coming back for more!
